DISCOVERY CENTER

Students in grades K-8th who need extra academic services can benefit from the Discovery Center here at DMC. We are proud to be one of Elim Christian School’s Outreach Network members. They provide our Discovery Center staff with onsite and remote educational consultation, school-wide program & process development, resource sharing, professional development and opportunities for school-to-school collaboration. This helps us better serve our students as they navigate individual learning differences. Discovery Center participants meet with our center’s staff as needed for extra help with topics such as math, reading and vocabulary.

OMNIBUS

The Omnibus program challenges students who need additional enrichment. Our students in grades 2nd – 4th who have been recommended by their classroom teacher can participate in Omnibus. The class is held once a week for each grade level and lasts approximately 30 minutes.

Students in the program benefit from extra activities in topics such as creative writing, math, computer, and research projects. Examples of units studied include natural disasters, patriotic symbols, animal research projects, migrating birds, space exploration, and countries.

ACCELERATED READING

Kindergarten through 5th grade students participate in the Accelerated Reader program. This computer based reading program allows students to earn points based on reading comprehension tests. They can use their points to “purchase” fun items from the Accelerated Reader store! This is a great reward based program that promotes love for reading and improved reading comprehension skills.

SUMMER READING

Before the end of each school year, students go home with the annual Summer Reading program info! We encourage our students to rest and have fun over the summer but to keep practicing their reading skills. They can record the titles they’ve read and number of pages and receive prizes based on the total.

Summer of 2017 readers at DeMotte Christian Grade School totaled ninety students from grades 1-8. Students received ice cream coupons, and red, green, or blue certificates according to how many pages they had read. A big thank-you to DeMotte Dairy Queen for the free ice cream coupons! Students with the blue certificates also received a free book.  Sixty-two students received blue certificates and a free book this year. Wow! Reading opens the door to a world of imagination and adventure! The top three readers were Matt Roodzant with 31,082 pages (grade 8), Jillian Tysen with 14,931 pages (grade 4), and Kyle Bayci with 7,830 pages (grade 4).  Congratulations to all students who participated!  Keep reading!
